Debbie Green Memorial drawing raises $3,000 for leukemia patients
Packed pits, stands help draw points season to a close

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Friday, Aug. 30, 2002) -- Even with high school football cranking up around the Ohio Valley, long lines of fans and over 100 drivers returned to the track from last week’s rainout to pack the stands and fill the pits to near capacity for the Debbie Green Memorial racing program at Cannonball Motor Speedway Friday night. Cannonball Challenge contenders included drivers eligible from the past two weekends.

Proceeds from the night’s 50/50 drawing went to this year’s recipients of the Debbie Green Memorial fund, established by Ronnie Green after his sister Debbie died of leukemia. Over $3,100 was raised at the event, which will benefit two area children with leukemia -- Scott Owens of St. Clairsville and Kody Braley of Mt. Pleasant . Cannonball Pure Stock driver Nathan Boulet won the drawing, which was held between races. “I didn’t make the feature,” Boulet said as he collected the money, “but this makes it worthwhile!”

Last year’s Debbie Green Memorial recipient, Robbie Kemp, drew the winning ticket.

Flag carriers for the night’s opening ceremonies were Corey Conley, Jess Hartman, Ryan Twarog and J.E. Stalder.

LATE MODELS

Danger, danger, danger! The top 10 Late Model points leaders lined up in inverted order to see who could survive Cannonball’s Australian Pursuit, sponsored by QuickTime Performance. Once passed, a car must retire immediately, and among the early outs were Rick Armstrong, Donnie McFarland and Charlie Maloney. Mike Davis crashed out, leaving Doug Dodd to try to chase down Greg Baumberger. Baumberger opened up a comfortable margin, and come home the winner over Dodd.

Earlier in the evening, three wild and crazy Late Model heats set the field for an equally wild and crazy feature -- minus Cannonball Challenge contender and two-time double feature winner Corey Conley. Conley had to settle for the consey after blowing an engine in his heat, but as the field took the green flag Conley got caught up in an opening lap crash that terminally damaged the #14 and ended his night early.

Doug Dodd earned the pole beside Challenge contestant Charlie Maloney. The other contenders -- Greg Baumberger, Ty Myers and Mark Banal -- were spread out through the pack. Sammy Stile started sixteenth by winning the consey.

As field came off the line crashing, banging and spinning, Maloney took the early lead with Dodd and Baumberger in pursuit. Baumberger got by Dodd, then past Maloney on the inside. Behind them a couple of hard-working drivers broke into the top five -- Sonny Conley, up to third from a tenth-place start, and, behind Banal in fourth, Stile in fifth from near the tail.

With the third through fifth cars running two- and three-wide at times, up front Maloney kept pressure on Baumberger. Baumberger finally faltered, and Maloney and Banal got around. Banal got alongside and then around Maloney, grinding sheet metal in the process. Maloney continued to pursue Banal down to the wire, but Maloney got home first. Stile secured third followed by Conley. Baumberger rounded out the top five.

AMRA MODIFIEDS

Norm Aronhalt sat on the pole for the AMRA Modified feature beside Jess Hartman, with Larry Kugel and Chris Dickson forming row two.

Corey Conley, once again running two divisions, had a little better luck with the Mods. Starting eighth, by lap 3 he had put Gib Patt’s #707 in third spot behind leaders Hartman and Kugel. Conley then got around Kugel for second, setting up a struggle for third between Kugel and Junior Nolan. Chris Dickson finally squeezed the #00 between the two, but Nolan then dropped back and headed into the infield. Dickson picked up one more spot to finish third behind Hartman and Conley. Ed Robinette rounded out the top five.

STREET STOCKS

Kenny Isner and Kevin Smith set the first row of the Street Stock feature, followed by Todd Brennan and Tom Cota in row two.

Smith cruised into the lead to stay as Isner retired early and Gary Knollinger, Jr. gave chase in second. Cota held onto third with a very persistent Ryan Twarog all over his rear bumper, but Knollinger suddenly headed up the hill to the pits, leaving Smith with a comfortable lead over Cota and Twarog.

Meanwhile, eleventh-starting Rick Conley had gotten by Brennan and settled into fourth. Doug Crall, starting near the tail in fourteenth, had also improved his situation, now taking on Brennan for sixth.

When the checkered flew Smith collected his tenth feature win at Cannonball this season. Cota finished second, but Twarog didn’t make it easy -- Cota was just able to keep a nose out in front as the two crossed the line. Conley and Brennan rounded out the top five.

PURE STOCKS

The Pure Stocks had a tough time getting their feature started, but after several incidents that forced two complete restarts and retired half a dozen cars, things finally got rolling. Aubrey Nolan sat on the pole beside Randy Clark, with Josh Boulet and J.E. Stalder behind them in row two.

Clark and Stalder became two of the early retirements, while out front Nolan took the lead, lost the handle, and gave over to Randy Bauknecht, up from a tenth-place start, and Ted Bier. Nolan, Boulet and Ty Glasgow now escalated a three-wide scuffle for third, with Glasgow coming out the worst of it as he made a miscue in turn 2 and wound up high against the rail. Boulet continued to pressure Nolan, trying first the inside line then the outside groove but, with laps running out, could get alongside briefly but not past.

At the finish Bauknecht checked in first ahead of last week’s feature winner Bier, while Nolan successfully held off Boulet for third. Scott Brown, starting from the very tail through the consey, beat the high attrition rate and came home fourth. Dave McConn, also starting from the tail, survived a battle with Dave McNabb to round out the top five.

FOUR-CYLINDER HOBBY STOCKS

Another nice field of thirteen Four-Cylinders took to the track for their feature, with Hank Geis on the pole beside John McNutt, and Bill Stutler and Dale Beatty in row two.

Geis, last week’s winner looking for his third feature win in a row at Cannonball, got out front early but pulled up lame on a flat tire. Rookie Kathy Peckins spun out of turn four and wound up against the wall, but backed out and continued on to a seventh-place finish.

Meanwhile at the front Stutler had inherited the lead, but abruptly headed for the pits, leaving John McNutt out front with Ray Scott second and Terry Colletti and Scott Davis going at it door-to-door for third. With two to go a caution period retired Scott, and on the restart with one to go Rick Angelo shot into third and set his sights on Davis . But time ran out, and the checkered flew for McNutt, Davis, and Angelo in third. Coming home fourth from the rear of the pack was Matt Long, with Charles Daugherty rounding out the top five.

MINI-WEDGES

Paige Dodd shot from the rear of a field of nine Mini-Wedges to mount a last lap, three-wide charge for the lead with Rachel Robinette and David Henry, Jr.

Robinette spun out and Dodd got the advantage coming down to the line, collecting her first feature win at Cannonball in just her third appearance there. Henry, Kody Smith, Brendon Twarog and Scott Folmar rounded out the top five.

POWDERPUFF

In the end the ladies got the last word, capping off the evening with Powderpuff events in three divisions.

Michelle Fischer in the #3 AMRA Modified drove away from Heidi McPeak in the #9 to get the win.

Erin Brennan put the #30 Street Stock out front to stay in her feature, but came home steaming in front of Tonya Piper’s #D78, who staved off a last minute pass attempt by the #R35. Arlene Cross (#7) and Mindy Carpenter (#00) rounded out the top five.

Angie Decker drove like a pro in the Pure Stock event, bringing the #17JE across the line in front of Missy O’Brien in the #11X.

Coming up …

Next Friday, Sept. 6, the Cannonball points race will come to a close with the WTOV9 Season Championship featuring double points in all divisions -- Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Four-Cylinders, along with the kids’ Mini-Wedges.

Also, the AMRA Modified division will offer $1,500 to win in the feature.

Thank you…

Ronnie Green would like to offer a sincere ‘thank you’ to all of those who supported the night’s 50/50 drawing and t-shirt sales. Green said the total proceeds from the Debbie Green Memorial fund, including additional bonuses, would approach $10,000 to benefit local children with leukemia.
