Matt Aber returns to Cannonball ... as
a spectator
Garrett repeats; Banal, Johnson
and
Knollinger, Jr. get first wins of season at CMS
By LORI PETTIT
ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio - Several familiar names appeared
in the Late Model lineup for the first time this year at
Cannonball Motor Speedway Friday night.
Mike Eaton returned to challenge brother Doug to another
bout of sibling rivalry and Blaine Aber made his Cannonball
debut in a new #81 Late Model as his son Matt watched
pitside. In the feature, Mark Banal resumed his winning ways
and Tye Long took an unscheduled ride.
Kenny Johnson and Gary Knollinger, Jr. got their first
wins of the year at CMS for the AMRA Modifieds and Pure
Stocks, while Pat Garrett returned to victory lane in the
Street Stock division.
LATE MODELS
Just two and half weeks after a frightening highway
accident near his shop in Wooster, Ohio, Late Model driver
Matt Aber was back in the pits at Cannonball - as a
spectator. Aber will face a long summer recuperating from
broken bones - including a shattered hip - and other
injuries that will keep him out of action for the rest of
the season, but he was able to watch his father compete at
Cannonball Friday night.
Last week local driver D.J. Cline drove Aber's #31 to
victory in the Late Model division at CMS. This week Cline
lined up ninth in the #9, and Matt's father, Late Model
champion Blaine Aber, tacked the #81 car on the end of the
field in 17th in his first time out at Cannonball.
Doug and Mike Eaton made up the first row of the Late
Model feature, with Mark Banal, Greg Baumberger, Charlie
Maloney, Bob Moskey, Tye Long, Scott Peltz, Greg Gellner, Ed
Shuman, Troy Miller, Mark Moats, Mike Davis, Lou Bradich,
Danny McFarland and Tim Reed rounding out the field.
Both Eatons went for the lead at the green, with Doug
coming out on top with Mike behind, Baumberger third and
Banal fourth and looking for a chance to get by. Points
leader Scott Peltz's night ended abruptly as the "Batman"
suddenly pointed his #15 car toward the pits in the early
laps.
The front runners reformed, with D.Eaton out front,
M.Eaton second, and Banal third ahead of Bob Moskey as
Baumberger fell back. Moskey, however, gave the spot back to
Baumberger and went up the hill during a caution for a spin
by Charlie Maloney.
Racing resumed long enough for Banal to grab second, then
the caution flew again for a spin by Greg Gellner. D.Eaton,
Banal, M.Eaton, Baumberger, Tye Long and Mike Davis made up
the top six by lap 5.
The restart was a disaster for the cars behind Long - a
pileup at the head of the frontstretch collected Mark Moats,
D.J. Cline, Ed Shuman, Maloney and Tim Reed and sent Long's
car rolling onto its roof. Cline immediately bailed out of
his car to help Long, but fortunately the only casualties
were the vehicles.
Long walked away as his #55 was righted and taken off on
a hook. Cline climbed back into the cockpit and attempted to
continue, but was forced off with front end damage. Moats,
Maloney and Mike Davis also headed up the hill.
By the time the lineup was sorted out and the green flag
dropped - minus Blaine Aber, who also retired early - the
field consisted of Banal, D.Eaton, Baumberger, Lou Bradich,
M.Eaton, Troy Miller, Shuman, Gellner, Reed and Danny
McFarland.
Banal dusted off the rest of the pack on the restart,
leaving D.Eaton and Baumberger in a dogfight for second that
lasted until Bradich was able to get by D.Eaton in time to
finish third.
Reed, in his second start this year at Cannonball, came
to the feature from the transfer spot in the consey, started
last, survived the crash and came home sixth by about an
inch over M.Eaton.
The top 10 finishers were the top 10 survivors: out of
the original 18-car lineup, Banal, Baumberger, Bradich,
D.Eaton, Miller, Reed, M.Eaton, Shuman, Gellner and
McFarland took the checkered flag.
Heats were won by Greg Baumberger, Scott Peltz and Doug
Eaton.
Danny McFarland, Blaine Aber and Tim Reed advanced to the
feature through the consey.
AMRA MODIFIEDS
It was a tough night for two of the AMRA Modified
favorites. Gerald Deitch's #43 broke in his heat and he did
not start the feature, while Jerry Farmer took a hard hit in
the early going of the race.
Andy Parsons sat on the pole beside Jeff Jones, followed
by last week's winner Ed Robinette and Junior Nolan in row
two. Kenny Johnson, Bill Westlake, Pat Carlin, Jr., Jerry
Farmer, J.D. Jones, Greg Bender, Ray Brown, Jay Howe, Gib
Patt, Jay Helton, Larry Brown and Jimmy Petrelle made up the
rest of the field.
It took two tries to get going, but Ed Robinette grabbed
the lead over Andy Parsons just before a spin by Jeff Jones
collected Jerry Farmer and Ray Brown in turn 1 on the first
lap. Farmer was reportedly shaken up, and the #20 was towed
to the pits.
Robinette took the green on the restart ahead of Parsons,
Kenny Johnson and Junior Nolan, but Pat Carlin, Jr. got
around Nolan and then Johnson for third before the caution
flew for a spin by Jimmy Petrelle in turn 4. After the
restart, Carlin went low, then high, then cut across traffic
and lost the spot as Johnson and Parsons picked up the
battle for second.
Nolan made a brief road trip into the shrubbery behind
turn 4 and the caution came out as he headed pitside.
Robinette, Johnson, Parsons, Carlin, and Gib Patt made up
the top 5 until, on the restart, Johnson caught and passed
Robinette. The two leaders began to put some distance
between themselves and the rest of the field, but as Larry
Brown hit the skids coming out of turn 1, Jay Helton was
forced to take evasive action and the caution flew once
more. The restart set up a shootout for second between
Robinette and Carlin with Parsons fourth, but the lead was
all Johnson's to the end.
Robinette held off Carlin for second, followed by Parsons
and Helton. Patt, Jeff Jones, Greg Bender, Larry Brown and
Ray Brown rounded out the top ten.
Heats were won by Junior Nolan and Ed Robinette.
STREET STOCKS
Ed Watson secured the pole for the Street Stocks,
followed by Pat Garrett, B.J. Kuthy, Ryan Twarog, Rod White,
Donnie Collette, Fred Snyder, Brian Nethers, Kenny Isner,
Josh Sigler, Scott Wages, Matt Flesher, Kurt Waller, Bob
Wilt, Lou Ennis, Kevin Smith, Jason Graham and Ed Mills. Rob
Melzer scratched and did not start.
Ryan Twarog jumped from fourth place to third behind Ed
Watson, but it was leader Pat Garrett's race from beginning
to end. Twarog mounted a charge on Watson until he nosed
into the back of Watson's #11W and both spun. Twarog went to
the tail and eventually retired with transmission problems.
Garrett kept a comfortable lead with Watson in pursuit
and things heating up for third between Kuthy and Rod White.
White briefly claimed the spot, but relinquished it on a
restart after a caution for a spin by Donnie Collette.
Last week's winner Kevin Smith kept the pace in fifth
behind Garrett, Watson, Kuthy and White. Smith made a run at
White, but the #2 went up in smoke coming off the
backstretch, slowed, and headed for the infield.
Garrett, who last collected the Street Stock trophy at
Cannonball on June 22, cruised to the checkered as Watson
and Kuthy charged side-by-side to the wire. Kuthy picked up
second, followed by Watson, White, Collette, Fred Snyder,
Kurt Waller, Josh Sigler, Bob Wilt and Matt Flesher.
Heats were won by B.J. Kuthy and Rod White.
PURE STOCKS
Michael Hatem had an interesting evening in the Pure
Stock division, although he did not make the feature. Like
Tye Long, he wound up on his roof coming out of turn 1
during the consey. Hatem was not injured.
Larry Jarrett, who finished second in last week's feature
but took a hard hit the week before, put in another rough
night at Cannonball. His #62 sustained heavy damage during
his heat in a crash that also put the #3 of Todd Baier up
against the wall by the flagstand.
They finally came out of the chute with John Marley on
the pole, followed by Gary Knollinger, Jr., Bobby Nolan,
Jr., Josh Boulet, Bobby Nolan, Brad Ronshausen, Dave McNabb,
Jim Cochran, Kevin Harris, Ed Leasure, Dale Westlake, Dave
McConn, Bob Kugler, Randy Bauknecht, Ron Carothers, Bryan
Eureka, Doug Blon, Tony Wilson, Rich Frohnapfel and Ted
Bier.
Gary Knollinger, Jr., taking over for Knollinger, Sr. in
the #21K, held off John Marley in the early going as Bobby
Nolan and Brad Ronshausen scuffled for third ahead of Jim
Cochran. Things began to get physical when Cochran and Ed
Leasure got together in turn 1 with an audible crunch, then
Ronshausen and Marley made contact on lap 7. Marley headed
pitside with a flat tire, followed by Ronshausen.
Knollinger kept the lead on the restart, but Nolan, in
second, got loose and collected Bobby Nolan, Jr. along with
Doug Blon who took a hit from Ron Carothers. Nolan rejoined
the action, but Nolan, Jr., Carothers and eventually Blon
all headed up the hill.
Knollinger, Leasure, Bryan Eureka, Dave McNabb, Rich
Frohnapfel and Bob Kugler formed up the top six for the
restart. The front five set the pace down to the wire, but
Frohnapfel and Kugler had swapped places for fifth and sixth
by the time the checkered flew. Dave McConn, Bobby Nolan,
Josh Boulet and Ted Bier rounded out the top ten.
Heats were won by Dave McNabb, Jim Cochran and Gary
Knollinger.
Bryan Eureka, Doug Blon, Tony Wilson, Rich Frohnapfel and
Ted Bier advanced to the feature through the consey.
Trophies were sponsored by Gunite Construction.
